This quote is taken from the novel "Roses in December" by Naguib Mahfouz. The story follows the life of a middle-aged man named Ahmed, who is married to Tilv. Tilv is not happy with her life and constantly complains about her husband. She seems to ignore that she has children and refuses to care for them.

Her attitude almost causes Ahmed to leave her. However, Neferre tells her that she should try to make the best of what she has because this may be all she has. The next day Tilv holds a large party for her daughter’s wedding, leaving Neferre alone with Ahmed’s daughter, Aisha, who is very ill.

Neferre tells Aisha that if she is a good girl and learns from what happened to her mother when she was young, then maybe she will have a better life than her mother. In the end, Aisha chooses to live for herself instead of living for others which shows that even though they are taught these things their whole lives they still have a choice in the matter.
